CORONER'S WARNING AFTER 'NEGLECT' AT HOSPITAL
A MAN died at a Nottinghamshire hospital after staff significantly delayed resuscitating him during a cardiac arrest.
Connor Nelson died on November 30, 2024, at King’s Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield following a prolonged cardiopulmonary arrest on the hospital’s Emergency Assessment Unit on November 10.
Mr Nelson, who was aged 34 and lived in Mansfield, had undiagnosed congenital prolonged QTc syndrome, which means the heart muscle takes longer than usual to recharge between beats and led to an arrhythmia and subsequently to his cardiac arrest.
An inquest was held into Mr Nelson’s death at Nottingham Coroner's Court to explore the circumstances in which he died.
Giving her findings and conclusion on November, Dr Elizabeth Didcock, assistant coroner for Nottinghamshire, said that Mr Nelson’s resuscitation at the time of his cardiac arrest was “sub-optimal”.
Dr Didcock added that there was a delay of nine minutes in administering the necessary shock and that staff also failed to diagnose Mr Nelson’s QTc syndrome.
