Plans for student flats approved despite being turned down by council

A COUNCIL's planning department has been dubbed “obsolete” after the Government stepped in to approve plans to demolish a car showroom and build student flats.
The application to knock down the Beeston Car Centre in Broadgate and build student flats in its place was submitted in 2023 - but rejected by Broxtowe Borough Council following strong opposition.
But the applicant lodged an appeal and the plans have now been approved by the Planning Inspector-ate.
Concerns have been raised over the amount of student accommodation in the area, with some residents claiming the new development will cause an oversaturation of students.
Beeston resident Ian Cooper, who has been following the application, said: “One of my objections is that the density of HMOs (homes in multiple occupation) is in excess of 20%. I tried to talk them through my research, and they ignored me.
