MANSFIELD MP LEADS WESTMINSTER DEBATE ON HOUSING ISSUES
AN MP says crowded housing in his Notts town is causing more fly-tipping and parking problems.
Lifelong residents of Mansfield are being left feeling as if they have “lost their say” on what happens on their street, according to Labour's Steve Yemm.
The MP was speaking during a debate in Westminster that he organised on houses in multiple occupation (HMOs).
An HMO is a property where at least three tenants live, forming more than one household and sharing facilities like a toilet and kitchen.
The rented properties have boomed in Nottingham, particularly due to the demand from students, as well as in other parts of Nottingham-shire.
Mr Yemm opened his debate by saying: “Let me be clear at the outset that HMOs have a place.
“They can provide flexible, affordable housing for students, young workers and those getting started in the housing market.”
Figures compiled by the Local Democracy Reporting Service at the start of October showed that Mansfield District Council has received eight applications since January to convert standard homes into HMOs.
Four of those applications had been approved and four were still under consideration as of October 6.
