Our city centre is unsafe - let's put it right for good

VISIBLE policing is welcomed and needed in Nottingham city centre. As someone who walks through it daily, | know that people just don’t feel safe any more, writes LOUIS CORBETT.

Old Market Square, a focus for the new Security Industry Authority-licensed officers, is a hive of low-level crime and antisocial behaviour and, while it does get worse at the weekend, it remains a problem throughout the week.

| welcome the new scheme to have licensed officers providing more public reassurance. But their effectiveness is yet to be seen. While | appreciate that the city centre is busier in the summer, it disappointed me that they have only been extended until September.

| want to stress that Nottinghamshire Police have a significant presence in the city centre. Still, the issues | will be discussing are low-level crime, general safety and the sense of security in the city centre that we all deserve.
