Milestone in battle for new road bridge over the River Trent

THE long-running campaign for a fourth road bridge over the River Trent in Nottingham has taken a “crucial step” thanks to a new £1 million fund.

Nottingham currently has three road bridges crossing the River Trent - Clifton Bridge, Trent Bridge and Lady Bay Bridge.

The last to open was Clifton Bridge in 1958 and although work is now starting on a new bridge to connect Lady Bay to Trent Basin, that structure will only be for pedestrians and cyclists to use.

Campaigners have been calling for a new road bridge to be built for decades, but the issue came to a head in February 2020 when the closure of Clifton Bridge eastbound for emergency repairs caused journey times to be lengthened by hours.

Plans have now taken a major step forward after Nottinghamshire County Council confirmed it will use part of a new £1 million fund to carry out a study looking into potential options for a fourth crossing.
