BECKY ARRIVED AT COURT TO BE TOLD HEARING WAS BEING PUT BACK BY MORE THAN A YEAR

- By MARTIN NAYLOR

A BUSINESS owner has slammed a criminal justice system she claims is "failing magnificently" after being told a trial she is the alleged victim in will now take place an incredible six years after she first went to the police.

Former Nottingham journalist Becky Sheeran said she felt "battered physically and emotionally" after arriving in court this week to give evidence only to be told the trial of the man accused of assaulting her will be adjourned to March, 2028.

The 37-year-old, who worked for the BBC and Notts Live TV before starting her own media agency, said she believes her situation is "sadly not unique" and that she worries people will lose faith and not report alleged crimes in the same way she did in 2019.

She said: "Everyone in the UK is entitled to a fair trial but six years from reporting (the alleged crime) to reaching a conclusion, even if that still happens, is not a reasonable amount of time to go through for anyone.

"What worries me is that people won't report things, they won't go to the police to put that initial complaint in and people will lose faith in a system that I believe is failing magnificently.
