How the childhood game of conkers could be under threat

EVERYONE who cares about the natural world will have undoubtedly have been on a unique journey leading them to their personal appreciation and connection with the natural world.

- By ERIN MCDAID

Growing up, I was lucky to have the freedom to explore my local patch - spending much of my time in local parks and heading off on mini expeditions into the woodlands and farmland on the edge of town. My affection for nature was shaped by seemingly endless days spent climbing trees, den building or looking for newts and tadpoles. These formative experiences moulded my lifelong passion for the natural world and in many respects, my childlike fascination and wonder have never left me.

I still marvel at how tadpoles morph into frogs or toads and how caterpillars transform into butterflies or moths.

At this time of year, I still love to see the myriads of red, yellow and orange hues of autumn leaves and occasionally, when no one is looking, I'll still shuffle through a pile of leaves beneath spreading bows. Whilst walking my dog, I cannot help filling my pockets with pine cones, without any real reason or purpose - I just love the look and feel of these natural treasures.
