Driver killed cyclist he 'did not even see' court is told

A COMPANY director killed a 71-year-old cyclist he “did not even see” as he “cut a corner” and turned into a street, a jury has heard.

CCTV footage played at Nottingham Crown Court showed Philip Appleyard’s Volvo hit cyclist Pauline Askew as she was riding along the road, leaving her with a brain injury from which she never recovered.

The prosecution said the 67-year-old defendant later told the police “I did not know where she came from” as he turned right and the car and bike collided.

The defendant, who has no previous convictions or cautions, denies causing Mrs Askew's death through careless driving.

Prosecutor Gareth Gimson, opening the trial, said the collision happened at the junction of London Road and South Street, Retford, at about 10am on December 14, 2022.
