It was the last week of April when I boarded a late-night flight from Mumbai to Muscat, seeking something the city couldn't offer—space, silence, and the serenity of a desert sky. I had read just enough about Oman to know it wasn't Dubai's flamboyant cousin. Oman promised mystery, mountains, and a meditative emptiness. I wanted a destination that whispered instead of shouted, and Oman, somehow, was calling in whispers.

The first impression of Muscat was a slow exhale. Even the airport didn't rush. Customs officers smiled gently, their dishdashas crisp and white. There were no towering skyscrapers or blinking neon signs outside—just the brown-red Al Hajar mountains glowing under the morning sun like freshly fired clay. It was like arriving in a painting whose brushstrokes had been deliberately slowed down.

The taxi driver, Hamoud, spoke in careful English as he drove me to Muttrah. "Oman is peace," he said, pointing to the endless clean roads and the minarets that peeked between low-rise white buildings. "We do not like too much noise." I nodded, understanding immediately what he meant. There is a quiet grace to this country, a sense of ancient dignity that modernity hasn't bulldozed.

In Muttrah, I checked into a hotel that overlooked the corniche. My room had a small balcony from where I could watch the gentle tides of the Arabian Sea brushing against dhows. I took long walks down the promenade, passing fishermen with sun-worn faces, children on scooters, and cats who looked like they ran the port. The scent of frankincense lingered in the air, and the call to prayer floated over the harbor like a song that had been playing forever.

The Muttrah Souq was a sensory ambush. Inside its narrow lanes, I felt like a reluctant time traveler. Spices, silver khanjars, turbans, rugs, and golden lamps spilled out of shops in a chaos that somehow didn't overwhelm.
