CLASHES AT TEMPLE IN CANADA
-
NEW DELHI: A violent clash at a Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada, has ignited a diplomatic storm between India and Canada. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condemned the "deliberate attack" on the Hindu Sabha temple, calling for justice and urging the Canadian government to uphold the rule of law. Political parties and religious organizations in India have also voiced their outrage, demanding that Canada take swift measures to prevent further incidents.
The incident occurred on Sunday, when protesters carrying Khalistani flags disrupted a consular event co-hosted by the Hindu Sabha temple and the Indian Consulate in Brampton. Videos circulating on social media appear to show skirmishes between protesters and temple attendees, with some demonstrators wielding poles and banners bearing pro-Khalistan slogans. The clash has deepened concerns about the safety of Indian nationals and diplomats in Canada, especially as tensions between the two countries remain high over issues related to Khalistani separatism.
Prime Minister Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his dismay. "I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on a Hindu temple in Canada. Equally appalling are the cowardly attempts to intimidate our diplomats. Such acts of violence will never weaken India's resolve," Modi wrote. He continued, "We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law." The statement marks Modi's first public comments since the recent deterioration in India-Canada relations.
