ERC rule change boosts renewables

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has revised its rules for the net-metering program, making it easier for consumers to adopt renewable energy (RE) and utilize smart technologies.
Net metering is a program that allows consumers, typically those with solar panels, to generate their own power. Any excess electricity produced is sent back to the grid, and consumers receive credits on their electric bills.
According to a document released by the ERC, the new rules allow for the banking and rollover of net-metering credits. Additionally, these credits can now be transferred to a new owner when a property changes hands.
