Woman beaten at Rüfüs Du Sol show sues Rose Bowl
October 06, 2025
|Los Angeles Times
Shelby Lynn Elston walked into the Rose Bowl ready for an unforgettable night of Rüfüs Du Sol’s music with her fiance. She left with a black eye and multiple lacerations after she was knocked unconscious in an attack by a fellow concertgoer.
Now, she is suing the venue for the injuries she suffered at the Aug. 16 show, which she alleges were enabled by inadequate security.
On Wednesday, Elston and fiance Cain Thomas Stephens Webb, who was also injured during the attack, filed a personal injury complaint in Los Angeles County Superior Court against the Rose Bowl Operating Co. and the suspect, Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala.
Pasadena city spokesperson Lisa Derderian said the stadium is unable to comment on pending litigation.
Zavala, 23, was arrested by Pasadena police on Aug. 21 and pleaded not guilty to two counts of felony assault on Aug. 25, according to court records. Zavala’s attorney, Lee Paul Hallada, said his client maintains his innocence.
“We are still further investigating the incident and looking for further video/security footage that covers the entire incident versus what has been shown throughout social media,” Hallada said in a statement. “Hopefully, this will come to light and allow our client to be proved innocent.”

El Camino Real crowned after wild week in soccer
It figured that after one of the strangest weeks in City Section soccer history, in which six teams were eliminated from the playoffs because of ineligible players and the lights went out for 15 minutes during overtime in the Open Division boys’ final between El Camino Real and Birmingham, it took penalty kicks late into Saturday night to decide the final match of the season at Pasadena City College.
