BERGERAC STAR DAMIEN MOLONY AND WRITER TOBY WHITHOUSE CHAT TO LYNN RUSK ABOUT THE RETURN OF THE POPULAR REBOOTED CRIME DRAMA
-
ATTRACTION: Jim meets Nicola, played by Camilla Beeput
THERE'S something about the nostalgia and comfort of a reboot that excites audiences.
Favourite series such as Doctor Who, Cold Feet and All Creatures Great and Small were all revived to the delight of the British public.
The classic TV crime drama Bergerac received similar treatment, returning last year.
Set on the island of Jersey, the original BBC programme ran for nine series from 1981 to 1991 and starred John Nettles as the complex detective sergeant Jim Bergerac, who later became a private investigator.
The rebooted series, written by Toby Whithouse, stars Irish actor Damien Molony in the title role and has now returned for a second series.
The latest instalment sees Bergerac attempting to rebuild his life following his wife’s death while investigating a murder at a wedding reception.
The series also sees the return of Zoë Wanamaker as Bergerac’s mother-in-law, Charlie Hungerford, and Robert Gilbert as fellow detective Barney Crozier.
New cast members include Lesley Sharp, Camilla Beeput and Adrian Edmondson.
Damien, who is known for his roles in Ripper Street and Being Human, says his character is seeking new connections in this series.
"It's been 18 months since his wife passed away, and it feels like everyone is kind of moving on," says the 42-year-old actor.
"His daughter Kim is moving to the mainland to go to music school, and Charlie, his mother-in-law, is now dating. I think Jim is in danger of being left behind.
"He is dating or I would say he's reluctantly dating."
