ARGE and small, gates and gateways are often the first thing seen when approaching a building or open space, statements of power or location.

Gate expectations

Long after buildings have been swept away, gates or at least gate posts remain as reminders of what has been.

Strawberry Field was a big house in Woolton but only the gates remain, a place of pilgrimage for Beatles fans from around the world.

Arrowe Park gates have long been a meeting place for those starting walks across the Wirral countryside, while Princes Park is well known to many for its impressive, golden sunburst-adorned gates.

Elaborate or artistic gates can be moved to new sites to enhance other properties, their original function only a fading memory.

Looking through gateways in areas that have changed over the years evokes images of disappeared views and landscapes.
