A DANGEROUS driver led police on a 90mph pursuit through Southport before crashing into a Grade II-listed bandstand and hurtling into the Marine Lake.

- By WESLEY HOLMES

Harry Mason, 30, caused £90,000 damage to the 120-year-old bus shelter at the end of Albany Road before falsely claiming his car had been stolen.

At around 3.45am on February 1 this year, a police officer driving on Roe Lane noticed a silver Mercedes crash twice into the kerb and indicated for the car to pull over.

The driver sped away from him, leading to a high-speed chase in the direction of the Promenade.

At Liverpool Crown Court yesterday, prosecutor Hannah Darling said: “Roe Lane has a speed limit of 30mph. As it travelled along Roe Lane, the vehicle appeared to lift off the ground over the hill at Norwood Avenue, clearly indicating he was travelling at an extremely high speed.”
