The team effort to create 7,500 crocheted poppies

How people came together to mark Centenary events at memorial with knitting

A GRANT has allowed Leek knitters to create thousands of crochet poppies, which have been on display on the Nicholson War Memorial for its Centenary events.

The £500 was applied for by the War Memorial Committee of Leek Town Council and was used to purchase wool to supply volunteer knitters.

Local knitters took on the challenge with gusto and produced more than 7,500 poppies. Those involved were Kit and Knatter Groups at The Priory and Foxlowe Arts Centre, the Pompettes from The Haregate Centre, and various local Women’s Institute groups, as well as many individual knitters who heard about the project and wanted to be involved.
