The myth of the invisible woman: Or, put another way, how once she reaches a certain age, a woman can slip out of the male gaze.

- Kate Wobschall on Riot Women

When the girl gang are all having a midlife crisis, best predict a riot

One minute you're the centre of attention, mildly irritated by wolf whistles in the street, meeting offers of drinks and phone numbers with an eye role and a smart remark, the next it's like you're not even there.

It's a phenomenon writer Sally Wainwright not so much as touches on but whacks over the head with a sledgehammer in her new series Riot Women.

It follows five menopausal women - a teacher, a police officer, a pub landlady, a midwife, and a shoplifting freeloader-and is set in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.

For a local talent contest, they decide to form a punk rock band, and suddenly find they have a lot more to say about being middle-aged women navigating the ebbs and flows of life.

Unpopular opinion alert: I didn't watch Wainwright's previous hit Happy Valley. Nor did I catch Last Tango in Halifax or Gentleman Jack either - but it felt like I was coming to Riot Women with a fresh perspective.
