Former Ayr United defender George Stanger insists crossing the Ayrshire divide was a 'good step' for his career after joining Kilmarnock.

- CALLUM CARSON

Having learned his trade in the lower leagues with stints at the likes of Stirling Albion, East Kilbride, Forfar Athletic, Dumbarton and Alloa Athletic, Stanger made the most of his opportunity of a return to full-time football at Ayr United.

The 24-year-old New Zealand youth international started all but one league game for the Honest Men last season as they finished third in the Championship and pens a two-year deal at Kilmarnock.

He made 80 appearances and found the net five times during his two year stint at Somerset Park before electing to leave in the summer.
