A GOVERNMENT campaign aimed at attracting young Irish people back home said they should target a “two-year itch” when the reality of settling down abroad for good began to sink in.

Scoping documents also said the country was still suffering a post-Celtic Tiger hangover where parents actively discouraged sons and daughters from a career in the construction sector.

A design brief for the Build Back Home campaign detailed how the early part of an emigrant's journey was full of adventure and opportunity.

However, the €443,000 campaign said there was a point when people began to understand it would be just as difficult to start a new life elsewhere and homesickness was likely to set in.

It said property prices in hotspots for Irish emigrants like Vancouver, Sydney, and London were also sky-high, and it was equally as hard to get on the property ladder.
