MCDONAGH BEATS POWER'S MARK BUT NEITHER IS OUR YOUNGEST PRO

- GERRY CALLAN

CORK super-featherweight James Power stopped local Omar Santos Alvarado at 1:37 of round two in Tijuana in Mexico on his debut in September 2018.

At the time, the Leaving Cert student at Coachford College was billed as Ireland's youngest ever professional at 17 years and 173 days.

Last Saturday, Power's record was beaten by another fighter from the Rebel County, super-middleweight Bernie McDonagh.

Fighting north of Boston, McDonagh decked Matheus Pereira in the opening round en route to scoring a unanimous decision win in their four-rounder, taking two judges' cards of 39-36 and one of 40-35.

McDonagh, living in Boston and fighting out of the Grealish Boxing Gym-founded some three decades ago by Galway native Martin Grealish-in nearby Dorchester, was 17 years and 104 days old on fight day. He is due to have his second paid outing on June 21 in Boston.
