JOHN Cleese was well-known for his work on Monty Python's Flying Circus when he teamed up with his American wife Connie Booth to co-write and star in Fawlty Towers.

The story began in May 1970 when Cleese and the rest of the Monty Python team stayed at the 41-bedroom Hotel Gleneagles in Asheldon Road, Torquay, Devon.

The hotel was owned by 60-year-old Donald Sinclair and his wife, Beatrice, and they appeared to believe quests were more an inconvenience than a necessity.
