WHERE JAMES' AMAZING 4-12 HAUL RANKS IN THE HISTORY OF THE GAME

- PAT NOLAN

It's Naught every day you see it

THE advent of two-pointers, not to mention strong winds, may I have bloated scoring tallies this year so far but that doesn't account for James Naughton's scoring blitz on Sunday.

The Limerick man finished with a whopping 4-12 as Jimmy Lee's side ensured a swift return to Division Three with a 4-24 to 1-17 win over Waterford at Mick Neville Park in Rathkeale.

Of that tally, there was only one two-pointer, which came from a free, as well as seven single-point frees as 4-3 of his total came from play, a hugely impressive tally in itself.

Of course, the GAA's lack of a centralised statistical database - though one is currently in the works means that verifying where exactly Naughton's tally stands in the history of the game is next to impossible.

But we can say with some degree of confidence that it ranks near, if not at, the very top.

Lod Championship records are more accessible than those for the League and it is accepted that Cillian O'Connor's (right) 4-9 for Mayo in the 2020 All-Ireland semi-final against Tipperary is the biggest in the flagship competition.
