Horse with 'no more to give' dies three days after National collapse

Celebre d'Allen passed away three days after falling during the latter stages of Saturday's show-piece race at Aintree.

The tragedy has reignited concerns about safety in racing.

Jockey Micheal Nolan was handed a 10-day suspension by stewards for his decision to continue to ride the horse when he had "no more to give" after jumping the penultimate fence.

imageThe 13-year-old gelding, trained by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White, stayed at Aintree overnight on Saturday before heading back to their stables for further treatment.

Hobbs and White said in a state-ment: "We're heartbroken to share that Celebre d'Allen has passed away. He received the very best treatment by the veterinary teams and was improving.

"However, he deteriorated significantly and could not be saved. He was a wonderful horse and we will all miss him greatly."
