HALF of the Irish public believe Micheal Martin should step down as Fianna Fail leader, a new poll shows.

While support for the Taoiseach has grown three percentage points to 36% compared to last month, 49% think he should resign as party leader following the presidential election scandal, according to the latest Sunday Independent / Ireland Thinks study.

In September, Fianna Fail's candidate Jim Gavin sensationally pulled out of the race after it emerged he owed a former tenant more than €3,000.

A further 33% believe Mr Martin should step down next November, when Tanaiste Simon Harris is due to become Taoiseach.
