Lowry grateful for the Portrush support & now he hopes to see the tournament being held even closer to his Dublin base

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

SHANE LOWRY relishes the prospect of playing the first Open Championship at Portmarnock after being blown away by the Portrush support that stayed with him.

Championship Sunday on the Dunluce Links was different this time with no Claret Jug to chase, whereas six years ago it was getting dark as he pointed his car back towards Dublin with golf's greatest trophy in tow.

Lowry left Portrush just after lunch yesterday following his 9am final round tee-time.

His controversial two-shot penalty on Friday was followed by an illness-affected third round that left him with little to play for on the final day.

While he headed for the exit feeling bittersweet about the week, at least he did so taking good vibes into his FedEx play offs and Ryder Cup preparation after a family holiday.

The local hero shot a thrilling 66 in perfect conditions to finish on five-under par.
