ADULTS across Ireland are being urged to take part in Sober October, and abstain from drinking alcohol throughout the month.

- BY KEITH FALKINER

It comes as recent research shows that many Irish drinkers are now ditching binge sessions to take a more moderate approach to their alcohol intake.

Findings from the Drinkaware Barometer 2024 have revealed a cultural shift that has been building momentum towards moderation.

It found that 37% of adults in Ireland say that they would like to drink alcohol less often — the highest figure recorded to date and up from 24% from findings in 2020.

Drinkaware chief Dearbhla O’Brien said: “Every year we see more and more people reflecting on their relationship with alcohol, and the latest figures show a real momentum for change.

“With over a third of adults wanting to drink less, and more than half of young adults already making positive changes, Sober October is the perfect chance to join in and see the benefits for yourself.

“Whether it's feeling better in your body, improving your mental health, saving money, or just enjoying social time without alcohol, even a short break can make a real difference.”
