The Blues were on track for a hard-earned point away to Shamrock Rovers last Friday before the Hoops pounced for a 75th-minute winner.
It means Waterford have won just once in their last seven games and sit third from bottom, but eight points clear of the promotion-relegation playoff.
And boss Coleman feels the performances are improving as his side try to climb the table.
