New generation 2 series will get standing ovation from BMW fans

BEHOLD the latest little tempter from BMW, the reassuringly old-school 2 Series Gran Coupe.

Its now entering its second generation with a new more flamboyant design, enhanced suspension technology and a renewed drive portfolio.

Latest generation petrol engines, including 48-volt mild hybrid technology on the BMW 220 M Sport Gran Coupé, mean the car can tick the boxes on both efficiency and getting some bang for your buck with excellent power output across the whole range.

We won't see too many here but if you have a deep wallet, the BMW M235 xDrive Gran Coupé delivers exhilarating performance, with 300 hp and 400 Nm, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds.

Realistically, in our VRT-ravaged land, most Irish cars to be sold will likely be the 220 M Sport.

So then it’s a very good thing that that's the car I got to drive — and it is in fact the very one you see here in these pictures.

CLASSIC

As you can see it’s a sexy little thing despite having the dreaded four doors.
