'Common sense' plea as he and Trump set off for Davos

TAOISEACH Micheal Martin hopes "common sense will prevail" in the Greenland crisis.

President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 10% tariff "on any and all goods" from NATO allies UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland unless Washington acquires the territory from Denmark.

Mr Martin said: "I would hope common sense will prevail. A trade war would be very, very damaging indeed to workers across Europe, workers across the US and indeed the world."

Speaking in the Dail, People Before Profit-Solidarity's Paul Murphy said the Government should "stop appeasing Trump".

He said: "That means we should not be going to the White House on St Patrick's Day."

Responding to whether he will still meet with Trump on St Patrick's Day meeting, the Taoiseach said: "We have to do everything we can to protect the jobs that depend on [links with US], without sacrificing basic principles.
