THE green man will stay lit up for at least an extra second at pedestrian crossings to give an ageing and increasingly overweight population in the UK time to cross the road. 

The current 6.1 seconds allows people to navigate both lanes at an average speed of 1.2 metres per second – but many now struggle to move that fast.
