JACKY Towers tells me to “respect the democratic vote” to leave the European Union (Mail Box, November 3).

But democracy isn’t a onetime event - it’s an ongoing process. As Goole and Pocklington MP David Davis, a former Brexit negotiator, said in 2012: “If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy.”
The 2016 referendum result was close - 52 per cent Leave versus 48 per cent Remain. Even Nigel Farage, speaking to the “Daily Mirror” before the vote, said that such a margin would be “unfinished business by a long way” if Remain had won. Yet when Leave scraped through by that exact margin, we were told the matter was settled.
