The places most at risk from rising seas

NEW maps show the places in North Wales most at risk of falling into the sea.

And among those locations thought to be most in danger are in Anglesey and Colwyn Bay, with Traeth Porthor (Whistling Sands) on the Llyn Peninsula, thought to be potentially one of the most at risk in Wales.
Across Wales, the latest estimates suggest that almost 400 properties are at risk from coastal erosion. Without intervention, these homes could one day be consumed by waves or simply topple into the sea.
Combined with the much larger risk of tidal flooding, it’s an existential problem for some communities as parts of the Welsh coastline shrinks and recedes, reports Wales Online.
In total, around 60% of the Welsh population live in coastal areas. A Welsh Government risk management strategy for flooding and coastal erosion published in 2020 stated that over 245,000 properties in Wales are at risk of flooding from rivers, the sea and surface water with almost 400 properties also at risk from coastal erosion.
It added: “As the climate changes we can expect those risks to increase, with more frequent and severe floods, rising sea levels and faster rates of erosion of the coast.”
