Turning India into a global centre for higher education

Opening its doors for top foreign higher education institutions to set up branches in India; setting up first ever global campuses of IITs in Zanzibar and Abu Dhabi; and pushing Indian institutes to offer dual and joint degrees with their foreign counterparts-these were among a host of efforts which were undertaken by the Centre last year in its pursuit of "internationalisation" of the Indian education system.

Turning India into a global centre for higher education

The initiatives were taken as a part of the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that emphasises on promoting India as a global study destination and to restore its role as a "Vishwa Guru".

The year 2023 began with the UGC releasing the draft regulations for foreign universities to set up campuses in the country on January 5. Later on November 8, the commission released the final set of guidelines. As of now, more than 10 universities, from Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Europe, have shown interest in setting up campuses in India and have registered themselves.
