TN BJP leader jailed for remarks against Periyar statues and Kanimozhi

A special court for elected representatives on Monday sentenced senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader H Raja to six-month imprisonment after convicting him in two separate cases, one for making defamatory comments against DMK lawmaker Kanimozhi and another for saying that statues of Dravidian movement founder Periyar would be demolished.

The special MPs/MLAs court in Chennai also imposed a fine totaling ₹5,000 on the former BJP national secretary in both cases filed against him in 2018. Special Judge G Jayavel, however, suspended the sentence for 30 days to enable Raja to file an appeal against his conviction and sentencing.
