Nadal's comeback halted, out of Aus Open with 'micro tear'

Rafael Nadal's comeback from a year on the sidelines due to injury has lasted three matches and seven sets.

The 22-time Grand Slam singles champion announced on Sunday that he has withdrawn from the Australian Open starting on January 14 because of a "micro tear".
Out since his second-round loss at Melbourne Park last year, he made his comeback last week at the Brisbane International to test a surgically repaired hip and get match time heading into the year's first Slam.
He beat Dominic Thiem and Jason Kubler in straight but took a medical timeout in the third set of his quarterfinal loss to Jordan Thompson on Friday, after holding three match points in the second set.
Nadal had initially said it seemed like more of a muscular problem than the tendon issue that caused him so much pain last year.
However, on Sunday he posted on X that scans after landing in Melbourne revealed it was more serious.
