Mamata asks PM to send UN peacekeepers

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday urged the Prime Minister to approach the United Nations and send peacekeepers to Bangladesh, remarks that drew condemnation from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which also held protests in several parts of the country against the alleged persecution of Hindus in the neighboring country.
Speaking on the floor of the state legislative assembly, Banerjee urged Narendra Modi's government to intervene in the escalating situation. "If required, let an international peacekeeping force be sent to Bangladesh after talking to the [interim] government there to help them restore normalcy," she said.
The chief minister criticised the central government's silence on the matter, noting they had been "remaining mum for the past 10 days." She suggested that India's minister of external affairs should make a statement in Parliament, which is currently in session.
