India Accelerates NATIONAL EV CHARGING GRID

India has accelerated the implementation of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure through the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme, launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The initiative aims to establish a nationwide EV-ready ecosystem, enabling cleaner transportation and reducing India's dependency on fossil fuels.

The PM E-DRIVE scheme is a transformative initiative that offers clean, affordable, and convenient mobility options to the people of India. This scheme not only emphasises the development of EV infrastructure in India but also establishes a foundation for energy security and sustainable economic growth.

With an outlay of ₹10,900 crore, the PM E-DRIVE scheme is being implemented from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026. The scheme aims to support EVs, including e-2W, e-3W, e-Trucks, e-buses, e-Ambulances, EV PCS and upgradation of testing agencies.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) is being considered as the nodal agency for demand aggregation and for the development of a unified digital super app, which will serve as a single platform for EV users across India. The app will feature real-time slot booking, payment integration, charger availability status, and progress dashboards for tracking national deployment under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. BHEL will also coordinate with states and ministries to compile and evaluate proposals for charger installations.

CHARGED-UP

  • ₹2,000 crore allocated to establish 72,000 EV public charging stations across India

  • Charging infrastructure to cover key cities, highways, airports, and industrial corridors

  • BHEL to be considered as the nodal agency for demand aggregation and development of a unified EV super app

  • 29,277 public EV charging stations have been installed in the country so far
