Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday attributed the Mahayuti's sweeping victory in the Maharashtra assembly polls to factors such as the Ladki Bahin scheme, significant turnout among women voters, and religious polarisation.
The veteran leader's remarks came even as his allies, the Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) took a swipe at Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners for the drubbing in the elections.
Speaking to reporters in Karad city in Satara district, Pawar acknowledged that the election results declared on Saturday - the NCP (SP) won only 10 of the 87 seats it contested - were far from what he had anticipated. "The Ladki Bahin scheme and religious polarisation played a role. Women's participation in large numbers could be the reason for the Mahayuti sweep in Maharashtra," he said. "We will study the reasons for the debacle and take necessary steps."
