Akal Takht orders Badal to atone, SAD to hold polls

AMRITSAR: The five high priests of Sikhism on Monday pronounced religious punishment on Sukhbir Singh Badal, directing the working committee of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to accept his resignation as party chief, besides forming a panel to hold elections to the post within six months.
Pronouncing the religious punishment for the "mistakes" committed by the SAD and its government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017, the jathedar of Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, Giani Raghbir Singh announced the withdrawal of the title 'Fakr-e-Qaum' (pride of the community) bestowed upon former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, and directed Sukhbir to clean utensils and shoes in community service at the Golden Temple.
The punishment came nearly three months after Sukhbir was declared "tankhaiya" (guilty of religious misconduct) by the Akal Takht.
