HOW DOES EARTH 'BREATHE'?
The health of the Amazon rainforest has long been recognized as a key parameter of the overall sustainability of the planet (for human habitation; lots of other life forms will likely continue).
It was one of the world's largest carbon absorbers. It still releases 20 billion tonnes of water into the atmosphere a day, shaping weather and carbon cycles.
But, this year alone, fires lit to clear land for human activity have scorched an area roughly the size of Italy.
