Only 7 couples register live-in status in 1 month of UCC law

Seven couples have registered their live-in relationships under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) since it came into effect in Uttarakhand on January 27, according to official data.

On January 27, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the UCC portal for registration of marriage, divorce, live-in relationships and wills, and released rules for the implementation of the legislation.

The law makes it obligatory for live-in partners within the state, whether they are residents of Uttarakhand or not, to register their relationship with the registrar within whose jurisdiction they are living.

It also applies to the residents of Uttarakhand who reside outside the state.

The provisions will also apply in the cases where one of the partners is a foreign national and the other is a resident of Uttarakhand.

When questioned about fewer registrations, Shailesh Bagauli, secretary of home department, said: "We are satisfied with the number of registrations under the UCC. Since it is a new thing, will take some time for people to come out for the registration."
