Student Leader Held in '22 Case, Oppn Hits Out

Student leader Nirmal Chaudhary was arrested while Congress MLA Nirmal Chaudhary was detained by police from the Rajasthan University campus early on Saturday morning when they went to appear for the exam, said officials.

JAIPUR: A purported video of the incident that went viral on social media showed that some police staff, wearing plain dress, arrived at the university campus in the morning, opened the collapsible gate, caught both Chaudhary and Poonia, and pushed them in a car while a clash also erupted with some other students who went to get them released.

However, the police said that Chaudhary was arrested in a three-year-old case while they also denied Poonia's detention. The Gandhi Nagar DSP, Narayan Bajiya said, "Chaudhary was arrested in connection to a case back in 2022 which was registered under section 186 (obstructing a public servant discharging duty) and 353 (assaulting or using criminal force on a public servant). A DSP was also seriously injured by Chaudhary in this case. However, we did not detain or arrest Poonia. He himself forcibly entered the police van when we went to arrest Chaudhary."
