Plea seeking rent arrears of Bikaner House dismissed

The Delhi high court on Monday dismissed a petition filed by the Estate of Late Maharaja Dr Karni Singh of Bikaner, seeking arrears of rent for the Bikaner House property in New Delhi.
JODHPUR: The court held that the payments made to the Maharaja were purely ex gratia and not enforceable as a legal right after his demise.
The petition, filed by Rajyashree Kumari Bikaner, the daughter and executrix of the late Maharaja, sought directions to the Union of India to release outstanding rent arrears from October 1991 to December 2014. The petitioner also challenged the requirement of a 'No Dues Certificate' from the Government of Rajasthan for the release of the rent.
