Country to Reach 500 GW Renewable Energy Target by '30, Says Union Minister

Union Minister of Renewable Energy Prahlad Joshi announced on Tuesday that India is committed to reaching 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

JAIPUR: The target is part of the country's broader effort to accelerate clean energy production and reduce carbon emissions.

Additionally, India plans to fulfil 50% of its energy needs through renewable sources by 2030 and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. These ambitious targets are part of the government's larger strategy to combat climate crisis and enhance energy self-sufficiency.

Joshi said during a regional review meeting on renewable energy in Jaipur, where he discussed the government's progress in realising these goals. He said India's energy demand is expected to double by 2032, highlighting the increasing need for sustainable energy solutions.

The minister said the country, which was once the 11th largest economy in the world a decade ago, is now poised to become the third largest. This growth, he said, necessitates rapid advancements in energy self-reliance, a goal that both the central and state governments are prioritizing.
