NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court last week observed that the Indian Army should adapt to the changing times and take a "quantum jump" to achieve gender parity in appointment of women officers, as it reserved orders on a petition by two women who, despite high scores, failed to make it in the Judge Advocate general (JAG) branch of the Indian Army, due to a cap on the intake of women officers.

The two women, Arshnoor Kaur and Astha Tyagi approached the top court against a January 2023 advertisement issued by the Centre about six vacancies earmarked for men and three for women in the JAG branch, which is the department overseeing the legal work of the army.
