From sugar crashes to smog blues, here's your gentle post-Diwali detox guide, to reset your body, refresh your skin, and breathe easy again

Diwali's over, the sweets are gone, but the festive hangover still lingers. For many, the post-festival slump isn't just about sugar crashes. After days of laddoos, barfis and jalebis, the body starts feeling the excess. There's bloating, sluggishness, dull skin, tired eyes and in many cities, air so polluted that even breathing feels heavy. Now's the moment to pause, recover and refocus. With two months still left in the year, it's the perfect time to reboot your body and end the year feeling restored and energised.
DETOX: MORE THAN A BUZZWORD
"Detox is not just a trendy shortcut after festivals. It's a natural, 24x7 biological process," says Sheela Joseph, consultant nutrition at SPARSH Hospital, Bengaluru. She explains that true detoxification means supporting the body's natural systems, by staying hydrated for kidney filtration, eating enough protein for liver enzymes, consuming high-fibre foods to promote bowel movement, and loading up on antioxidants from fruits and vegetables. "Sleep, exercise, and stress control are equally important, as hormonal imbalance and inflammation can slow detox pathways," she adds.

Private sector can help address urban flooding
The torrential rains across India this monsoon once again exposed the deep vulnerabilities of its cities. Similar scenes of rain-wrought havoc played out across many cities, including metropolitan Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Urban centres that power India’s economy are now routinely drowning under their own weight — victims of poor planning and climate complacency. With climate-crisis-induced extreme rainfall events projected to surge by 43% by 2030, urban flooding is no longer an aberration — it's chronic crisis demanding urgent and systemic action. According to a 2025 World Bank report, India suffers average annual flood-related losses of nearly $4 billion, a figure expected to rise sharply as climate risks escalate and cities expand without adequate planning.

Rohingya case points to legal vacuum on refugees
True character is revealed not in comfort, but in crisis. And India has passed that test before. Our tradition of sheltering the persecuted is neither recent nor accidental. In 1959, when the Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetans fled Chinese persecution, India didn’t just open its borders, we helped build a community in exile that thrives to this day. That moment—and others such as the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, and the civil conflicts in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan —cemented India’s global image as a democracy with a moral compass.
