Metro 9 car shed land may turn from green zone into commercial

The state urban development department has plans to soon convert the Bhayandar metro car shed for Metro 9 from a green zone to a metro/residential/commercial zone.
MUMBAI:
The department has issued a notice in newspapers, and the joint director of town planning of the Konkan division has been appointed to hear the public's objections/suggestions.
A senior officer of the department said that MMRDA might want to commercially exploit the plot to cross-subsidise the project, and the usage was thus changed.
The car shed was originally planned on a 13-hectare plot at Morva, Rai Murdhe and Murdhe, but locals opposed this as 547 families would have to be displaced.
The site was thus shifted to Dongri Uttan, a sub-locality in Thane district near Bhayander East, but 1,406 trees will have to be chopped for this.
MMRDA and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation have already cut over 21,000 trees in Mumbai for various metro projects.
