EC seeks more central forces for Bengal elections

The Election Commission has asked for deployment of 150 more companies of the central armed police force (CAPF) for West Bengal assembly elections, officials aware of the matter said, adding that the deployment in the current elections is already thrice of the 2021 polls in the state.
Officials aware of the deployment details in West Bengal said while 845 CAPF companies were sent during the 2021 assembly elections, the number this time has already touched 2,550 (including the 250 additional companies sought). In the 2016 assembly elections, 800 CAPF companies were deployed and in the 2024, Lok Sabha elections 1,019 CAPF companies were deployed .
Voting across West Bengal’s 294 assembly constituencies will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29.
The additional 150 companies will reach the state by next week. One CAPF company has a sanctioned strength of 120-130, of which around 75-80 are deployed as per the standard operating procedure.
