Uttarakhand: Over 56% voters exercise franchise in civic polls

THE VOTING STARTED AT 8 AM AND BY 10 AM, THE STATE REPORTED AROUND 11.36% POLLING. IT INCREASED TO 25.70% BY 12 PM, 42.19% BY 2 PM AND 56.81% BY 4 PM
DEHRADUN: The fate of 5,405 candidates in the fray for 100 urban local bodies across the state was sealed on Thursday as the state reported 56.81% voting till 4 pm. Voting was held peacefully across the state for 11 municipal corporations, 43 municipal councils and 46 nagar panchayats. The results will be declared on January 25.
The voting started at 8 am and by 10 am, the state reported around 11.36% polling. It increased to 25.70% by 12 pm, 42.19% by 2 pm and 56.81% by 4 pm, according to the state election commission.
A total of 72 candidates are in the fray for mayoral seats, 445 for municipal councils. Over 4,800 candidates are in the contest for the post of councillor.
Rudraprayag and Haridwar districts reported highest voting turnout with 62.72% and 60.85%, respectively. Dehradun reported 51.56% voting - the lowest among 13 districts.
