Political slugfest erupts over shutting of madrasas in state

A political slugfest erupted over the ongoing action against "illegal" madrasas, with the Congress claiming that the Muslim community was being targeted by the government and that studies of students enrolled in such madrasas were getting affected, prompting a retort from the ruling BJP, which said that Congress's opposition was part of its "appeasement policy".

On Monday, the state government said it will investigate the funding received by illegal madrasas that have been sealed across the state and a report in this regard will be submitted directly to the chief minister's office (CMO). Since February, 136 madrasas in the entire state have been sealed for not having complete documents, whereas, according to the government report, more than 500 illegal madrasas are being operated in the entire state. Officials said there were about 450 registered madrasas in the state, which have submitted their documents, bank accounts and complete details of income and expenditure to the government.

Garima Dasuni, state Congress chief spokesperson, said that state government should first think about the repercussions of the action being taken against the madrasas.

"Where will all these students studying in Madrasas go? Hundreds of students have been affected by this action. BJP government keeps boasting of its stress on education, then why are they silent about the studies of these students which are getting affected by this action."

State Congress vice president Suryakant Dhasmana accused the state government of targeting one particular community.
